Outdoor Smart Home: TVs, Speakers & Lighting

Weatherproof technology that brings your garden, terrace, or pool into the system.

Extending smart home beyond the walls

The garden, terrace, and pool area are increasingly part of the smart home. Outdoor audio, weatherproof TVs, automated lighting, and motorised awnings all extend your living space outward — and should be as easy to control as anything indoors.

But outdoor technology faces challenges indoor gear never sees: rain, frost, UV degradation, insects, and extreme temperature swings. This guide covers what works, what does not, and what it costs.

Outdoor TVs: The terrace revolution

Standard TVs will fail outdoors. Even under a covered terrace, humidity and temperature swings kill electronics. You need an IP-rated outdoor TV designed for the purpose.

Samsung The Terrace: The market leader. IP55 rated, 2,000 nits brightness (sunlight-viewable), anti-reflection coating, available in 55", 65", 75", and 85". It runs Tizen and integrates with SmartThings. For full-shade or partial-shade terraces, it is the default recommendation.

SunBrite: US brand with strong outdoor heritage. Pro Series is fully weatherproof; Veranda for shaded areas. More expensive than Samsung but built like tanks.

ProofVision: UK-based outdoor TV specialist. Good value, solid build, available in sizes from 32" to 85". Popular with UK installers.

What to check: IP rating (IP55 minimum for partial cover, IP65 for exposed), brightness in nits (1,500+ for daytime viewing), operating temperature range, and warranty terms for outdoor use.

Outdoor speakers: Discreet and durable

Outdoor audio falls into two categories: landscape speakers (hidden in planting) and architectural speakers (mounted under eaves or on walls).

Landscape speakers:

  • Sonance Garden Series: Satellite speakers that look like landscape lighting, plus buried subwoofers. The gold standard for invisible garden audio.
  • James Loudspeaker: High-end landscape audio with excellent bass from buried subs.
  • Origin Acoustics: Good mid-range option with solid sound and reasonable pricing.

Architectural outdoor speakers:

  • Monitor Audio Climate series: All-weather on-wall and in-ceiling speakers. The CL80 and CL50 are popular for terraces.
  • Bowers & Wilkins AM-1: Premium outdoor monitor with rotating bracket. Beautiful sound, weatherproof build.
  • Sonos Outdoor: Works with Sonos Amp. Good for Sonos ecosystem homes. Needs some shelter.

Outdoor lighting

Garden lighting transforms how you use outdoor space after dark. Smart control means scenes: "Dinner" for warm, low-level terrace lighting; "Party" for colour-changing accents; "Security" for full brightness on motion detection.

Key techniques:

  • Uplighting: Ground-level fixtures aimed up at trees, walls, or architectural features. Creates drama and depth.
  • Path lighting: Bollards or recessed ground lights for safety and wayfinding.
  • Step lighting: Essential for safety on terraces, staircases, and around pools.
  • Moonlighting: Lights mounted high in trees, aimed down. Creates a natural, dappled effect like moonlight through branches.

Use IP67-rated fixtures for ground burial and IP65 for exposed walls. Warm white (2700K) is generally preferred for gardens; cooler temperatures feel harsh and institutional.

Network and control outdoors

Outdoor smart home devices need network connectivity and control system integration. Key considerations:

  • WiFi range: Outdoor access points or mesh nodes may be needed. Ubiquiti, Ruckus, and Aruba make weatherproof options.
  • Power: Outdoor sockets should be IP-rated and on RCD protection. Consider USB-C power for smaller devices.
  • Control: Most outdoor gear integrates with Control4, Savant, or Lutron via IP or relay control. Pool and spa controllers often have dedicated modules.
