Motorised Blinds & Curtains: A Complete Guide

Convenience, energy efficiency, and privacy — automated window treatments explained.

Why motorise your blinds?

Motorised blinds solve problems you did not know you had until you live with them. A single button closes every blind in the house when you leave. Sunrise gradually opens bedroom blinds to wake you naturally. Cinema mode drops the blinds, dims the lights, and starts the film in one press.

Beyond convenience, motorised blinds improve security (automated presence simulation), energy efficiency (solar gain management), and privacy (instant opacity at dusk).

The types of motorised window treatments

Roller blinds

The simplest and most popular. A fabric tube rolls up and down. Motorised versions are quiet, reliable, and available in blackout, dimout, and sunscreen fabrics. Best for modern homes and clean lines.

Roman blinds

Fabric folds into neat pleats when raised. Motorised Roman blinds add elegance to traditional interiors. The mechanism is more complex than rollers, so costs are higher.

Venetian blinds

Horizontal slats (aluminium or wood) tilt and raise. Motorised tilt and lift is available, though the motors are more visible than in roller systems. Good for precise light control.

Curtains and drapes

Motorised curtain tracks glide heavy fabrics open and closed. Silent Gliss and Lutron make near-silent systems that handle even very large windows. The motor is hidden in the track, invisible behind the heading.

Pleated and cellular blinds

Cellular (honeycomb) blinds trap air in pockets, providing insulation. Motorised versions are excellent for temperature control. They collapse to a small stack when raised.

Control options

  • Wall switches: Simple up/down/stop. Can be single-blind or group control.
  • Remote controls: Handheld or wall-mounted. Often 15-channel for multiple blinds.
  • Smart home integration: Control4, Savant, Lutron, Nice — blinds become part of scenes and schedules.
  • Voice control: "Alexa, close the living room blinds" — if integrated with your control system.
  • Sensors: Sun sensors lower blinds when glare hits the TV; wind sensors retract external awnings automatically.

Power: mains vs battery vs solar

Power TypeBest ForProsCons
Mains (230V)New builds, renovationsNo battery changes, most powerful, quietestRequires wiring, higher install cost
Battery (lithium)Retrofit, no wiring accessEasy install, no sparky neededBattery replacement every 1–3 years, less powerful
SolarHard-to-reach windows, eco preferenceSelf-sustaining, no wiring or batteriesRequires sunlight exposure, higher upfront cost

Brands worth considering

  • Lutron: The premium choice. Serena (battery), Palladiom (mains), and Sivoia QS (full integration). Near-silent, beautiful finishes, flawless control system integration. Expensive.
  • Silent Gliss: Swiss engineering. Exceptionally quiet motors, huge fabric range, excellent curtain tracks. The professional's choice for high-end homes.
  • Somfy: The volume leader. Motors inside many third-party blinds. Good value, reliable, wide compatibility. TaHoma hub adds smart home integration.
  • Hunter Douglas: Powerview system integrates well with Control4 and Savant. Excellent cellular and roller blind ranges.

Cost guide

TypeBasic (Battery)Mid (Mains)Premium (Integrated)
Roller blind (1 window)£300–£500£500–£900£900–£1,500
Roman blind£400–£700£700–£1,200£1,200–£2,000
Curtain track (3m)£600–£1,000£1,000–£1,800£1,800–£3,500

Whole-home packages (10–15 windows) typically range from £4,000 to £15,000 depending on power type, fabric, and integration level.

Integration with smart home scenes

The real value of motorised blinds comes when they are part of your control system. Examples:

  • Good Morning: Bedroom blinds open 20% at 7am, then fully at 8am, while kitchen blinds stay closed until 9am for privacy
  • Leaving Home: All blinds close, lights off, alarm armed — one button
  • Film Night: Living room blinds close, lights dim to cinema scene, projector starts
  • Summer Cooling: South-facing blinds close when outside temperature exceeds 24°C, reducing AC load
